Melanin + Mammograms

Early Screening Saves Lives.

This initiative was created to increase access to breast cancer screening, education, and support for Black women. Our goal is to walk along-side the women in this program through the entire process of getting screened, getting their results and beyond.

We recognize that barriers such as access to healthcare, transportation, financial limitations, childcare, and navigating the healthcare system can make prioritizing breast health challenging. Our goal is to help remove those barriers by connecting participants with dedicated volunteer navigators who provide individualized guidance and support throughout the screening process.

Participants will receive assistance with:

  • Scheduling and coordinating mammogram appointments.

  • Identifying available breast health resources.

  • Accessing transportation and other support services.

  • Navigating financial assistance and childcare resources when needed.

  • Understanding next steps following their appointments.

  • Receiving continued encouragement and support throughout their breast health journey.

Our commitment extends beyond simply helping women schedule a mammogram. We want every participant to feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout the screening process.

Our mission is to help reduce the disparities in breast cancer mortality among Black women by promoting early detection, increasing access to timely screenings, and eliminating barriers that prevent black women from prioritizing their breast health.

Black women continue to face disproportionate outcomes when it comes to breast cancer. Through education, advocacy, access, and individualized support, we are working to change that narrative one woman, one mammogram, and one life at a time. Through this program, we aim to support Black women, ages 40–74, as well as individuals of any age who may be at increased risk for breast cancer, in navigating and completing recommended mammograms.

A Little Extra Encouragement!

Melanin & Mammograms is made possible in part through funding support from Genentech, whose support helps us expand access to breast health resources and services within our community. As an additional way to celebrate participation and encourage engagement, Cierra Sisters will host a quarterly prize raffle. At the end of each quarter the program is active, a participant will be selected from those participating during that quarter to receive a special prize. It's our way of recognizing and celebrating the women who are taking meaningful steps toward prioritizing their health!

Early Screening Saves Lives. Together, we will reduce breast cancer disparities, close the screening gap, and change outcomes for Black women.
