Insights

We’re changing what it means to face breast cancer as a Black woman. Learn the facts, the barriers, and the hope driving our mission forward.

Standing in Truth. Fighting for Change.

Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at younger ages, with more aggressive forms, and at later stages — but we’re also more likely to survive and thrive when we have access to care, culturally competent support, and community.

Cierra Sisters was founded to make sure no Black woman faces breast cancer alone. Through education, advocacy, and sisterhood, we’re breaking cycles of silence, fear, and health inequity.

Why Black Women Are Disproportionately Affected

Breast cancer doesn’t impact every community the same way. For Black women, the disparities are layered — medical, social, and systemic.

  • Earlier and more aggressive diagnoses. Black women are more likely to develop triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most challenging forms to treat.

  • Delayed detection. Mistrust of the medical system, limited access to preventive care, and lack of awareness can lead to later-stage diagnoses.

  • Systemic barriers. Racism, bias in healthcare, and economic inequity create gaps in screening, treatment, and survivorship support.

  • Emotional and cultural isolation. Too many women carry this battle quietly — without the culturally affirming spaces that honor their experiences.

At Cierra Sisters, we turn isolation into connection — creating space to talk about what’s really happening in our bodies and in our communities.

The Power of Early Detection

When breast cancer is found early, the survival rate exceeds 90%.
That’s why we focus on education that meets women where they are — in churches, salons, community centers, and living rooms.

What we encourage every woman to do:
  • Know your family health history.
  • Schedule your mammogram every year starting at 40 (earlier if you have risk factors).
  • Do monthly self-breast checks.
  • Speak up if something doesn’t feel right.
  • Take someone with you to appointments — no one should have to navigate the system alone.

Early detection saves lives. Awareness starts conversations. Community builds courage.
Community and Connection Matter

Cierra Sisters goes beyond awareness — we build sisterhood.

Our members walk alongside each other through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. We host workshops, advocacy events, and support circles that center the voices of Black women.

Because when we move together, we change what’s possible.
